2004 Swanson Merlot is a powerful, concentrated expression of the variety. The nose shows black cherry, smoke, blackberry, and espresso. The flavors in the mouth echo the aromatic expression nicely. The fine-grained tannins for which our Merlots have become known provide the round, ripe texture of this wine.

Wine Profile

Vineyard Notes
Swanson's Merlot grapes are grown on our two estate vineyards. The Oakville Cross Road vineyard is located mid-valley, and the Schmidt Ranch is on benchland adjacent to the Mayacamas foothills on the western side of the Valley. The Merlot and Syrah were sourced from Oakville Cross Road, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc came from Schmidt Ranch.

Winemaker Notes
2004 was an early season in all sense of the term. Bud break began quicker than anticipated, followed by heat spikes as early as June. Further periods of heat followed, interspersed with our typical summer fog pattern. Veraison and other stages of maturation were also early. We waited for acidity to decline, and harvested our Merlot grapes at an excellent sugar-flavor-acid balance two to three weeks earlier than normal. Temperatures cooperated nicely. Fruit ripeness was optimal, and blocks were harvested on a predictable schedule, which facilitated quality control at the winery.
