The long, relatively cool growing season of 2001 was ideal for the production of perfectly ripe – both physically and physiologically - Merlot fruit in Oakville. Aromas of cassis, blackberry and clove are followed by a full, finely-textured mouth. Layers of black fruits, spice and espresso bean, plus a hint of smoky oak result in a wine that will fully satisfy all of your senses.

Wine Profile

Vineyard Notes
Swanson’s Merlot grapes are grown on our two estate vineyards. The Oakville Estate is located mid-valley, and the Schmidt Ranch in on benchland adjacent to the Mayacamas foothills on the western side of the valley. The Merlot and Syrah were sourced from the Oakville Estate, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blending components came from the Schmidt Ranch.

Winemaker Notes
A drier than normal winter and early spring, coupled with cooler than normal temperatures, combined to delay bud break. During early vine growth, higher than normal temperatures began and persisted throughout veraison. The rest of the growing season was slightly cooler than normal, but two extended periods of relatively warm temperatures helped to keep fruit maturation on track. The dry early season weather and relatively mild temperatures resulted in a luscious, complex wine full of ripe tannins, and a marvelous, exciting fresh fruit character.
