An ideal growing season endowed our 2000 Merlot with a complex bouquet of cherries, plums and black olives and soft, ripe tannins. The mouth-feel is broad and rich, with good acidity and a long finish.

Wine Profile

Vineyard Notes
Swanson’s Merlot grapes are grown on two estate vineyards in the Oakville appellation, one situated along the Napa River and the other (Schmidt Ranch) against the Mayacamas foothills on the west side of the valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blending components were sourced from the Schmidt Ranch, with the Syrah coming from the vineyard on the Napa River.

Winemaker Notes
An early bud break was encouraged by a spring of warm balmy days, which warmed the vineyard soils sooner than anticipated. We then experienced some cooler weather in the beginning of summer, slowing bud break, which had us all thinking “early harvest.” Two short periods of very hot weather, one in July and the other in August, did result in a slightly early harvest. Rapid sugar development, a warmer-than-average season with an extended “hang time”, all came together to produce a wine of excellent floral and fruit character.
