Deep garnet in color with exciting, nuanced aromas of rose petal, white pepper, raspberry and clove. Full-bodied, with very ripe, supple tannins that lead to a silky finish, followed by lingering notes of cherry pie and blackberry bramble. Try pairing with thin-crust pizza topped with sausage, Porcini mushrooms and Calabrian chili.
This 6-barrel lot of Zinfandel comes from a tiny vineyard in Wooden Valley, a sub-appellation of Napa Valley. Expertly farmed by one of our favorite small-growers, the fruit is remarkably consistent in quality from one vintage to the next.
There is no question that 2011 was a challenging vintage in Napa Valley. The only true path to success was to maneuver between rains that arrived both early and late in the season. The well-drained soil in our Zinfandel vineyard was a huge asset in 2011, but it was the decision to rigorously limit yield per vine and remove leaves to maintain open canopies that allowed the fruit to ripen even under cool and damp conditions.
