Very dark garnet red in color, the 2008 Oakville Petite Sirah shows big, brambly blackberry fruit on the nose, with hints of black licorice and anise. Full and extremely generous on the palate, the finish is long, lingering and aromatic. This is a big, dense wine that is best enjoyed with a well-marbled rib eye steak. It will continue to improve in the bottle through at least 2015.
Fruit for this wine was sourced exclusively from our Oakville Cross Road Estate Vineyard, located along the central corridor of Napa Valley. The clay-loam soil in our carefully tended small block of Petite Sirah is well suited to the production of a small crop of intense, concentrated fruit.
2008 in Napa Valley was a low-yielding vintage with grapes, and therefore wines, of intense concentration. Spring was very dry and cold, with 24 days of frost, resulting in a small crop. Summer was cool, with a few heat spikes in August. Our Petite Sirah was harvested in the cool morning hours under optimal conditions, following a short heat spell in late September, which Petite Sirah requires to reach final maturity.
