Tasting Notes
The 2010 Swanson Alexis Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent example of how concentrated, balanced Cabernet can be made successfully, even in a cool vintage. Generous aromas of cassis, black cherry, espresso bean and integrated French oak are present in the nose. On the palate, there is well-focused ripe fruit and mouth-filling tannin, yet the wine remains balanced, long, graceful and elegant on the finish. This Cabernet will continue to improve in the bottle with optimum drinkability from 2015 through 2022.
Vineyard Notes
Cabernet Sauvignon: from three small blocks – at Schenecker Vineyard adjacent to our Rutherford winery, at Sleeping Lady Vineyard in Yountville, and at Blossom Creek Vineyard outside Calistoga. Merlot: from a new block of Bordeaux clones 181 & 347 in our mid-valley Oakville Cross Road Estate Vineyard.
Winemaker Notes
Normal winter and spring precipitation levels, coupled with cool early season temperatures set the tone for a season with nicely-paced shoot growth and fruit development. June was warm, while July and August were cool. September and October provided just enough heat to ripen our Cabernet and Merlot grapes, but only because we severely limited the fruit production for every grapevine by multiple crop thinnings. We hand-harvested quickly in the cold early mornings over a 4-week period, bringing in each lot when we felt it had achieved its highest potential of quality.
