Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
A moderately deep color with a slight distinction between the tawny-red rim and ruby core, the 2011 Face Cabernet’s expressive and generous nose supplies hints of coffee, cigar box, and clove. Secondary notes on the nose and palette of wood, thyme and herbal characteristics are hallmarks of the 2011 vintage. The beautifully evolved and dusty tannins display a dark fruit core that moves into charcoal, well-seasoned leather, ripe plums and Herbes de Provence. This wine is beginning to enter a beautiful stage of its evolution. Drink over the next 10 – 15 years.
Vineyard Notes
Three separate vineyard sources from three distinct Napa Valley terroirs make up our sought-after “Face” Cabernet Sauvignon. High above Napa Valley, our Howell Mountain fruit grows from deep, red clay soils rich in iron and volcanic debris. The vineyard’s high elevation sits above the morning fog and maintains a more consistent temperature than the valley below. At the base of the Mayacamas, our Oakville and Yountville properties lay on alluvial fans made up of Bale and Clay loams – allowing deep root penetration and great drainage. The morning fog influences both of these valley-floor properties, giving a high diurnal variation in temperatures that result in a slow and steady ripening period required to produce intensity and flavor in the grapes from these two sites.
Winemaker Notes
2011 was a tough but ultimately rewarding season. Due to a cool and drawn out spring followed by a mild summer and early September rains, many of the wines showed a slightly lower pH, more moderate alcohol levels, and good tannin development. Many of our Cabernet Sauvignons display interesting varietal notes – herbal, lean, expressive and elegant.

Lovely wine with many layers. Tannins are still a bit forward but still so much is offered behind them. I have a case so will hold on and open the next bottle in a year or two. Worth drinking now but will enjoy even more as it mellows a bit with cellaring. I'm planning to order more!
