Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Almost all of the fruit for Swanson Merlot are grown at two vineyards: our Oakville Cross Road Estate vineyard, located mid-Valley, and the Schmidt Ranch, which is on benchland adjacent to the Mayacamas Mountains on the western side of the Valley. The Merlot was sourced primarily from the Oakville Cross Road Estate, while the Cabernet Sauvignon came from the Schmidt Ranch vineyard.
Winemaker Notes
The 2006 Swanson Merlot is a definite cross between classic Napa Merlot and quintessential Right-Bank Bordeaux. Ripe cassis and elegant black cherry on the nose, with a hint of spice and plum. The tannins are very ripe and firm. Sweet, toasty oak, overlaid with pure raspberry extract and black cherry. Will cellar very nicely for the next 10 years.
Other Notes
The heart and soul of our storied 100-acre Oakville Cross Road vineyard, Swanson Merlot established itself 20 vintages back and continues to set the standard of balance and consistency among all Napa and Sonoma Merlots. As complex and delicately layered as most Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, while delighting both new and discriminating palates with its trademark drink-ability, Merlot is who we are and what we do. We are Oakville’s largest producer of estate-grown Merlot, aptly and quite frequently described as the “Cab-lover's Merlot".
